Databases search missing data

This is part of the submitted UseCaseList.

Scenario

A description of the scenario that you have in mind.

The user wants to be notified if the watermark he looks for is not existent in the databases.

Importance

How important do you see this use case as?

  • Must Support

Dependencies

What other use cases are affected by the implementation of this one?

  • Databases usability / db integration / dating / authentication / cartography / bibliography

Input

Things that the user must/might supply to the system.

  • Visual search by user. Manipulation of the software interface, no other input.

Output

Things that the user will recieve in response to their request.

  • Notification that the searched data is missing.

Difficulties

Areas in which you foresee problems/issues arising.

  • Because the current hierarchical classes are ambiguous the user has to browse all the content of several classes to see if the watermark he is looking for is not present in them. Even then he can't be sure if he didn't overlook it - there is no objective way implemented in the software to ensure search reliability of missing watermarks. More problematic is the fact that the watermarks are not fully described in terms of composing elements, which means that the search effectiveness is totally dependent on the quality of the hierarchical classes.

Example

An example supporting this use case.

  • Task: find in Piccard-Online the watermark composed from the elements "Ochsenkopf, Kreuz, Schlange, Im Kreis" (a bull's head with a cross on top of it, over which is a snake, the whole circumscribed by a circle"). After this writer's research it seems that this combination is absent from the databases - but he can't be sure, even after spending a considerable amount of time checking several classes.

Other Information

Any other information that you think is important to include.

Comments

Comment from other partner regarding the use case.

  • It makes a huge difference, whether you have a sheet of paper with a watermark “a bull's head with a cross on top of it, over which is a snake, the whole circumscribed by a circle" in front of your eyes and you want to search a partner in one of the databases, or such a watermark exists just in your imagination and you want to realize whether there exists a real object corresponding with your ideas. In the first case and nil return it would be very helpful you could document your watermark in a database for further use. But for getting a quick nil return it would be very helpful to enable a combined research (bull’s head, cross, snake, circle). Therefore a complete indexing of all watermarks would be necessary. – FriederSchmidt
